Spring, summer 2017

Projects, exhibitions, new collections and directions.

So, this will be the second year at the new studio space in Bussum. It's taken a while converting the old print shop into a functioning art studio, but finally it's comfortable and I'm making good use of the available space in the main work studio and also in the communal gallery area. As the new studio is bigger than Amsterdam or London, it allows me to work on bigger projects if I choose. The new work, Gems and Mardi Gras collections have become larger and more dynamic I feel. As always, feel free to contact me at work. Coffee visits are nice, but please make an appointment first.

Summer 2015

I recently moved from Amsterdam to Bussum. We found a lovely family house with a great separate studio space attached. It's only 20 minutes from Amsterdam and the village lies in the midst of fantastic nature.

After I set up my new studio I have been experimenting and working further on the theme of my acrylic Gems collection
. The Gems are sometimes made of watercolour paper and in some cases made from recycled poplar wood. These wooden Gems have a three dimensional look and feel. They're sculptural, textured and tactile. They do not have glass frames like some of the paper Gems, but instead a thick hand-painted wood. I've concentrated on purples, blues, greens, yellows, reds and pinks and all manner of metallics, pearls, minerals, stones, silver and ultramarines. Many of the colours are iridescent and enhanced by a varnishing process or a finish of epoxy resin.

Another theme is the Mardi Gras collection
: double layers of colourful stripes in square paintings finished with epoxy resin. Together, they form a series of lines and can be doubled up or hung in threesomes, either vertically or horizontally.

Please feel welcome to visit me at my studio if you would like to see my work. Or check out gallery Nat! at Loods5 in Zaandam or Kunsthandel Dekker in Bussum. Both galleries always exhibit work of mine.

The summer 2014 collection

The new Gems collection series VI is made from recycled poplar wood and acrylic paints. These Gems have a three dimensional look and feel. They're sculptural, textured and tactile. The sizes are large and chunky (86x86 cm) but still have the simple elegance of the earlier Gems series.

I decided that this collection would not have glass frames but instead opted for a thick hand-painted wood frame.  I've concentrated on purples, blues, greens, yellows, reds and pinks and all manner of metallics, pearls, minerals, stones, silver and ultramarines. Many of the colours are iridescent and enhanced by a varnishing process. The first galleries to have received work of these series are Nat in Zaandam and Busarts in Bussum.

New projects in the pipeline: I am working on some exciting acrylic colour combinations. Follow me on Twitter and let me know what you think!

25 October 2012

An exciting Autumn with my most recent work being exhibited at the Amsterdam Affordable Art Fair (AAF) from 25 till 28 October through NAT! gallery. The AAF is a fantastic annual exhibition at the Westergasfabriek that you should check out if you get the chance.

What am I working on at the moment? Well, currently the Gems Collection is evolving. I am experimenting with recycled poplar wood. It has a more three dimensional feel and is therefore more sculptural and tactile. But the range is still a mix of exotic colours and iridescent metals, mother of pearls, minerals and stones, silver, metallics and ultramarines.

Also, I have recently explored Pixelart, which has turned out to be an interesting concept yet extremely time consuming and intense… Each piece contains thousands of small handmade acrylic pixels. Check out the results on ‘Pixelart’ and let me know what you think.

To view interior impressions of my work check out the online gallery.

If you’re interested to know more about my work or if you’d like to visit my studio, drop me a message. Or just visit one of the galleries that continuously have work of mine on display and are selling at reasonable prices: NAT! at Loods5 in Zaandam & Sliedrecht and Busarts gallery in Bussum. Also, there’sArtOlive, an online gallery that sells and rents out my work. All new exhibitions will be announced here in the near future.

Bye for now,
Marcus

February 2012

Time for a short update on what's happening.

After a busy experimental and exhibition period, the Manhattan Collection has finally come together. I wonder what new direction they'll take going forward. The colours and composition are really getting interesting.

My Gems Collection has also developed futher. Larger sizes and more exotic colours, fabulous iridescent metals and mother of pearls, minerals and stones: new silver from Canada, new metallics from Switzerland and Spain and a new range of exciting French ultramarines.

Good galleries selling my work at reasonable prices are NAT! at Loods5 in Zaandam and Sliedrecht, Art Olive
in Amsterdam and Busarts gallery in Bussum. They continuously have work of mine on display. And of course, you are always welcome to come by the studio in Amsterdam to buy work from me personally. Justcontact me so we can set up an appointment.

To see interior impressions of my work check out the online gallery.

I'm currently very much in a 'studio' period, creating and producing a lot of new ideas. I will announce any upcoming exhibitions on the Exhibitions page.

Any ideas, thoughts, advice or just unadulterated flattery would be appreciated via Contact!
